How to Make Your Own Healthy Granola Bars (Recipe)
Granola bars are considered to be a very healthy food choice, which has led to the emergence of numerous granola bar brands that have flooded the market since “organic bars moved from the gym bag to the handbag and desk drawer” and are now consumed on a daily basis “to supplement…regular eating habits” or to serve as “a breakfast on the go or entire meal.” (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, 2013) In fact, the popularity and demand for “snack, cereal and nutrition bars with an ever-expanding array of flavours and healthy varieties” are growing with each day. However, a lot of them are actually the opposite of healthy snacks and are filled with sugar and various unhealthy additives making them ‘enemies’ to our health.
Granola bars, usually mixed with nuts, fruit and other ingredients, are an extremely popular breakfast and snack food offering many health benefits. Some of these include their ability to regulate digestion, aid in weight loss, lower cholesterol, prevent anemia, improve heart health, and promote proper organ function. In addition, the consumption of granola bars is also associated with increased cognitive activity, improvement of skin quality, lower blood pressure, stimulation of new tissue and hormonal growth, stronger bones, management of diabetes, and even cancer prevention. Moreover, granola bars offer everything that people with busy lifestyles need – they are small, napkin-free, portable, highly nutritious, energy-boosting snacks that are light-weight yet filling.
In spite of their convenience and the numerous health benefits that granola bars are said to have, many of them are quite the opposite of healthy. If you read through the nutrition label and list of ingredients, you will find out that many bars are packed with sugar, additives, and carbohydrates, which provide the body with an initial burst of energy but very soon leave it drained and crashed. That is why, the best thing to do is to prepare your own homemade granola bars. Thus, you will be certain of the ingredients contained in them and will be able to make more nutritious snacks as well as cater your granola bars to your liking.
